The following types of warts are distinguished:

  • Seborrheic warts (verrucas) are degenerative skin changes that are not infectious.
  • Common warts (verruca vulgaris) are an infectious disease caused by HPV - human papilloma virus, of which there are several types and which also cause other warts (verruca plana, verruca plantaris, verruca filliformis), which are found on the feet and hands, head, neck.
  • Genital warts (condylomas) are HPV infections spread by sexual contact.
  • Contagious warts (Molluscum contagiosum) are infections with poxvirus.

As there are several types of warts, it is advisable to have them examined by a dermatologist before treatment.

Also, some types of skin cancer resemble warts in their growth and appearance, so diagnosis is necessary and surgical excision with examination is required if a tumor is suspected.

Other warts can be removed with ointments or with laser or cryotherapy.

Various methods are used to treat warts:

  • Surgical excision - excision of the formation and suturing of the wound. Performed always in cases, where histological examination of the wart is necessary.
  • Electrocautery - burning the wart with heat from a high-frequency electric current, a scab is formed which falls off after 10 days.
  • Laser - treatment with a laser that emits photons that destroy the cells of the wart, creating a scab that falls off after 10 days.
  • Cryotherapy - treatment with liquid nitrogen, which freezes the wart and then it falls off on its own and the wound heals.
