Liposuction
Content
Description
Liposuction (lipoplasty) is an aesthetic procedure suitable for body-reshaping by eliminating fat tissue cells through a suction canyle.
- Some certain body areas like buttock, hips, thights, stomach or arm, neck and back may contain fatty pockets that cannot be reduced despite diet and excercise. For these patients, liposuction represents a great option for body shaping.
- This procedure does not serve to reduce overall body weight.
Liposuction is one of the most popular procedure for reducing fatty areas.
Facts
- Local, sometimes general anesthesia
- Outpatient procedure
- Operation lasts 2 hours
- Recovery 2 to 4 weeks
Liposuction - as the name says means a suction of the fatty cells from your body.
A tumescent fluid (a special fluid for dissolving fat cells) is applied to the desired areas from small incisions.
After a while the dissolved fat is sucked out using a special blunt-tipped cannula. Small wounds are sutured or left open to heal.
After the procedure, it is necessary to wear compression garments for 6 weeks.
Liposuction (one of the most popular procedures) has undergone a grat development and several new procedures have occured.
- Classic technique (so-called wet technique) is using a fluid to dissolve fat cells and suction with vibrating cannula (Suction-Assisted Liposuction - SAL)
- Laser liposuction uses the thermal effect of the laser to remove fat cells (Laser-Assisted Liposuction - LAL)
- Ultrasonic liposuction uses mechanical waves (Ultrasound-assisted liposuction - UAL) to destroy fat cells
- Others (VASER - variation of laser liposuction, Power-Assisted Liposuction - PAL) and even more
The choice of the most suitable type of procedure depends on:
- the amount of fat and its distribution
- the wishes of the patient
- the preferences of the surgeon
Liposuction serves for body-shaping and not weight reduction.
The best results are achieved in patients with a stabile body weight (for at least for 6 months), good health condition and soft and elastic skin.
Poor candidates are patients with excess body fat, loose skin that cannot be stretched (in this case a wrinkled skin remains after liposuction) and patients in the process of losing weight (by diet or exercise).
After the operation a fluid (tumescent fluid) leaks from the wounds for about 2 days.
Gentle redness, swelling or bruising can occur.
The skin in the liposuctioned area must be stretched using elastic underwear (compression garment) for 6 weeks, therefore it is recommended to perform liposuction in autumn or during colder weather.
