Description

Ear surgery - otoplasty (known as ear pinning, ear reshaping) is a procedure that reshapes the position of ears in a case of prominent ears (sticking-out ears).

Otoplasty is done as a surgery (mostly outpatient procedure) at the age of 6 years or later, enhancing the proportions of the face and improving self-confidence.

Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

Facts

  • Local or General Anesthesia
  • Outpatient procedure
  • Surgery takes 60-90 minutes
  • Recovery in 2 weeks

Normal ear is separated by an angle about 25° (between 20-45°). Beyond these degrees the position of the ear appears as prominent (stick out).

There are no rules for timing of the otoplasty, the most appropriate age is about 6 years because the cartilage is strong enough to be shaped, but not too hard for molding.

Otoplasty can be performed by ear pinning, ear reshaping or through a combined approach. The decision is made according to the shape of ear and degree of protrusion.

Incisions are placed behind the ear and the scar is hidden in this inconspicuous location (but still present).

Recovery after the ear surgery takes about 1 - 2 weeks. The ears are wrapped around with dressing with dressing change in a week. Stiches are removed after 2 weeks.

A headband is worn for another 4 weeks and during sport activities.
