Neurological Examination
Content
Description
Neurology deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the nervous system. It deals with diseases of the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles.
Patients most often come to a neurologist with muscle weakness, nerve numbness or pain from excessive nerve irritation (tingling, tingling, burning - paresthesia).
Also with headaches, dizziness, memory impairment. Pain in the spine and limbs caused by nerve compression. As well as sleep disorders.
A neurologist also monitors patients after a stroke and with chronic diseases such as Parkinson's disease, epilepsy or Alzheimer's disease.
Facts
- Outpatient examination
- Examination lasts 30 minutes
The neurologist carefully asks the patient about the course of the disease - when and how it started, how long it lasts, whether the symptoms are changing (worsening). An overview of medications and the occurrence of similar symptoms in the family is important (a medical history is taken).
A neurologist performs a neurological examination:
Reflexes (by tapping with a neurological hammer), muscle strength, sensitivity (to heat, cold, touch) are tested. Speech, memory, general orientation, as well as coordination of movements and balance are tested.
A neurologist evaluates imaging methods (X-rays, MRI – magnetic resonance imaging, CT – computed tomography) and changes in the brain, spinal cord and nerves – if present.
To ensure that your examination is carried out as quickly as possible, bring the following documents with you to the clinic:
- Medical reports related to your problem
- List of medications you regularly take and list of allergies
- Descriptions (reports) from X-ray, CT, MRT examinations, as well as image documentation (CD, USB with images)
A neurologist can help diagnose diseases of the nervous system using specialized examinations:
After diagnosing the disease, a neurologist can help you with several treatment methods:
- Injections (i.e. injection treatment with the administration of a drug)
- Infusion therapy (infusion into veins for the overall effect of the drug)
- Treatment with botulinum toxin (to relieve muscle spasms)
- And others
